SHREWTON United scotched a run of five games without a win with a much-needed 2-1 victory at home to Marlborough on Tuesday night in Wiltshire League Premier Division.

Experienced forward Craig Lewis returned from Amesbury Town to seal the three points late in the second half but only after he had missed a penalty.

With confidence low due to recent poor form, the Shrews started slowly as they struggled to create any real chances of note in the opening exchanges.

Midway through the half, Lewis beat his man before seeing his low effort stopped by the visiting goalkeeper.

After a forgettable first half, the second period was in stark contrast as Shrewton piled on the pressure and created chances at will.

The deadlock was broken in the 55th minute as a stunning 25 yard volley from Nathan Osgood gave the Marlborough custodian no chance.

That goal sparked the visitors into life and a near passing move ended in an equaliser just minutes later.

However, Shrewton had a chance to regain the lead almost immediately after a penalty was awarded for a foul on Lewis. He stepped up but saw his effort saved.

Lewis was to get his goal as he beat four men before slotting the ball under the keeper to secure the three points.

Delighted Shrews manager Scott Young said: “I am really pleased with the points as things have not gone our way in recent weeks.

“Having Craig back allowed us to have more of a threat, and really we should have scored more.

“For the players we have at the club we should be higher up the league but we will do all we can to pick up as many points as possible in the remaining games.”

Eight-placed Shrewton visit FC Chippenham tonight (7.30pm) before taking on Melksham Town away on Saturday (3pm).

League rivals Sarum Youth Seniors, meanwhile, lost 2-1 at Wroughton on Saturday.
