CARETAKER manager/player Ben Smith started his brief stint in charge of Downton with a point at US Portsmouth after a turbulent few days at Wick Lane.

Following Colin Hopkins' resignation last week alongside Mitch Blake, the veteran centre-half is at the forefront until the end of the season - when Rae Hughes will take over.

Smith instantly played his part by helping Robins, in their third from final game, to a goalless draw on Monday night.

A bright start from the visitors saw Craig Tyson foiled in a one-on-one situation and Tom Aldridge found space but dragged his shot wide.

Smith nearly got on the scoresheet himself when his strong header, from Dan Telfer's cross, was tipped over the bar.

Portsmouth upped their game in the second period, testing the Robins' back three.

Declan McGregor, who will act as Smith's number two for the final two games, boosted the side with a late appearance but they couldn't conjure up a winning goal.

Smith said: "Not one player let themselves down in what has been a eventful week at the club and you never know if there heads are going to be in the right place with what's gone on."

"To come to Portsmouth, which is a tough ground to come to midweek and take a point, is exceptional."
