IT’S a proud day for Wiltshire’s James Vince, who is making his Test debut for England against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

It’s happening exactly ten years after the Warminster-schooled Vince, who played in all the Wiltshire junior age group county sides, made his debut for the Hampshire Academy – ironically, against South Wilts - in an ECB Southern Electric Premier League match on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground.

It’s wasn’t the most triumphant of debuts for then 15-year old, who was studying for his GCSEs at the time.

Batting at five (as he will for England), Vince was bowled by left-armer Adie Holewell (now with Amport) for one, having earlier taken a catch to dismiss Army capped Dan Webb (33).

South Wilts made 239-8, but lost by five wickets, Kevin Latouf hitting an unbeaten 122 for the then Young Hawks.

Latouf now runs a coffee and wine store in Bishop’s Waltham, near Winchester.

So, who played in that match on May 13 2006?

Led by Rob Wade, South Wilts included Western Australia’s Chris Wood (son of Test opener Graeme), while in the Academy side were Liam Dawson, Chris Benham, Latouf, and Vince.

Eddie Abel, on trial at the Ageas Bowl at the time, was caught napping and run out by Joe Cranch, who made 96* for South Wilts.
