A LONG-STANDING hockey club in Fordingbridge which completed the season with a -81 goal difference has folded.

Fordingbridge Hockey Club has enjoyed many successful years since forming in 1962 but last term was one to forget.

Struggling to field a full-strength side saw them finish rock-bottom in Hampshire Division 5 with -3 points.

The club originally had two teams but amalgamated into one due to lack of interest.

And despite the club wanting to continue, club stalwart Danny French says it was a lost cause.

The 48-year-old, who has been treasurer and chairman among other roles, said: "We just cannot get the players or interest and it has become too difficult to keep a side going."

"It's very disappointing that the team could only field seven or eight players each week. Commitment became a real issue."

"The town itself is small and the younger lads have other interests.

"All grassroots sports are suffering."

The club is having a farewell tournament on Sunday at Burgate School, the venue of their home matches.

There will be teams from Salisbury, Romsey and Fordingbridge competing from 11am to 4pm in the seven-a-side mixed tournament.

He added: "It's sad to see a club fold.

"We want Sunday to mark a celebration of the club.

"Anyone is welcome to come and watch and we are having a social afterwards with a presentation."
