DARRELL Clarke says he will be fielding a strong Bristol Rovers side when he returns to his old home on Saturday for a pre-season showdown (1pm).

The 38-year-old will arrive at the Ray Mac for a repeat of last year’s friendly which they won 4-1. A year on and both clubs have won promotion.

Rovers secured promotion to Sky Bet League One and Whites will prepare for Southern League Division One South and West after comfortably winning the Sydenhams Wessex Premier.

Clarke’s managerial career began at Old Sarum in 2010, where he won double promotions as a player/manager in three years taking the Whites back to the top level of non-league football.

The former midfielder’s success led to him being headhunted by Rovers in 2013 where he joined as assistant manager before taking the number one job and adding two further promotions.

That attracted interest this summer from Championship big guns Leeds United who made a formal approach, but he instead signed a new three-year deal at the Memorial Stadium.

Clarke, who made a guest appearance at the Salisbury Legends versus Charity Stars clash, said he’s excited about returning.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my team. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club and it’s going to be nice to see familiar faces,” he told JournalSport. “I will be bringing a strong squad so hopefully there’ll be plenty of support for both clubs.”

Former Whites, now Rovers players Will Puddy, Stuart Sinclair and James Clarke could be appearing. Boss Steve Claridge welcomed his charges back to work on Saturday where they were put through their paces at Hudson’s Field and the Ray Mac.

Newbies Justin Bennett, Lewis Benson and Josh Warren were in attendance alongside regulars Sam Roberts, Claudio Herbert, Brandon Mundy, George Colson and Elliot Wheeler.

Absentees included skipper Kane O’Keefe (ankle) and Calum Brockway (dislocated shoulder).

Joe Noakes and former Bemerton Heath Harlequins’ Seb Dawes and Joe Sanger have all registered with the Whites, looking to earn contracts.

“It was a good workout,” said Claridge. “We’ve definitely got a good nucleus here but I’ve still got places to fill so will be working hard before the Southern League season starts.

“I was impressed with the three new lads who have been registered. They’re fit and willing and showing a great attitude in wanting to try out.”

Tickets for Saturday’s friendly cost £9 adults, £6 concessions (students and senior citizens).
