BEMERTON Heath Harlequins cruised into the second qualifying round of the FA Vase after flattening Downton 7-0 on Saturday.

A Jack Slade hat-trick, Scott Joyce's double and a goal each for Sam Griffin and Jack Lovell wrapped up a comprehensive win for the Sydenhams Wessex Premier quick-starters.

Their reward is a home tie against Longwell Sports on Saturday, September 24.

Boss Graham Kemp said: "To be fair it has been coming.

"We should have done that to Amesbury. We scored goals at good times and Max Frampton [keeper] made a couple of key saves. It was one of those days when we took our chances."

Opposite number Rae Hughes, whose Robins have enjoyed a positive start in Sydenhams Wessex Division One, was left dejected.

"Bemerton are a good side and it was always going to be a tough task, but we just simply didn't turn up on the day.

"We are a young squad and this is a massive learning point for us."

Joining Heath into the next round is Amesbury Town following a 5-3 win over Hamworthy United in the first qualifying round.

Striker Steve Smith took his season tally to seven with a brace and Matt Morris also found the net but Blues substitute Josh Stockwell’s four-goal haul and a strike from Cameron Roach saw off the Hammers 5-3.

In the next round, they travel to league rivals Whitchurch United, who eliminated Laverstock and Ford.

Lavvy, boasting a 100 per cent start in Division One, went down 3-1.

Craig Smith and Danny Phillips gave United a two-goal cushion.

The visitors were handed a lifeline when Adam Jones halved the deficit but, as they pressed for a leveller, they were caught on the break, Phillips scoring his second.

Co-manager Liam McConnell said: "It's a shame from the club's perspective not to have progressed in the Vase, we were left disappointed with our exit from the FA Cup so this is equally disappointing, but we'll move on."
