TOMMY Wright’s love for goals continued on Valentine’s Day as Salisbury advanced to the semi-finals of the Southern League Challenge Cup with a gritty 2-1 victory at Barnstaple Town.

The striker extended his goal tally in north Devon with 37 minutes on the clock after Lewis Benson’s shot was parried into Wright’s path, and he stabbed home from close-range.

The opener came after fellow marksman Justin Bennett saw his effort diverted behind by Barum keeper Steve Oliver for a corner which was headed over by Elliot Wheeler.

Whites continued to dominate the quarter final tie, their reward for their late stoppage time turnaround last Tuesday at home to Shortwood United, in the second half.

Wright burst into the area and unleashed a shot against the post before Brian Dutton, handed a first team debut hours after completing the loan move from National South outfit Eastbourne Borough, fired over from a corner.

A second was coming and it arrived on 74 minutes through Taurean Roberts, whose wicked shot took a deflection off Barum skipper Craig Allan. It was the midfielder’s third goal for the club since his return this last week.

Whites were heading for a fifth clean sheet in six games, but that was wrecked deep into stoppage time when Ryan Turner netted at Mill Road.

The draw for the semi-final has been made. Steve Claridge’s men, who have won 12 out of 13 games in all competitions, will travel to Southern Premier strugglers Hayes and Yeading in the last four.

That game will take place on Tuesday, February 28 (7.45pm).

The other semi is between St Ives Town and the winner of Bishops Cleeve and Aylesbury United FC.

Whites travel to fellow play-off challengers Swindon Supermarine on Saturday (3pm).
