A CHEERLEADING team made their mark in the ICC British Open last weekend.

Phoenix Stars Cheerleaders, who are based in Old Sarum, entered two teams at the nationwide event.

Storm were placed seventh while top performers Gemini scooped second spot.

One of Gemini's athletes and Phoenix Stars head coach Elly Humphries, 19, picked up an award for most inspiring cheerleader after receiving a head injury in the warm-up and battling on to scoop silver with her team.

Team manager Jane Usher said: “We were so happy with both teams’ performances and had just finished celebrating Gemini’s second place.

"We were getting ready to leave the arena to come home when we realised they were calling Elly’s name.

"It was such an honour for one of our members to receive this award and a very emotional time for all involved in Phoenix Stars.

"We are all incredibly proud of Elly and what she has achieved at such a young age."
