Salisbury Men’s Hockey Firsts missed out on the play-offs, despite ending the season on a winning note.
They ran out 2-1 victors away at City of Portsmouth to finish in third place, while Southampton University came second and Gillingham are champions of Hampshire Division 1.
After a goalless first half, Rory MacTaggart played through Tom Morton who was upended in the box. Morton stepped up but fluffed his shot.
Salisbury's pressure continued and Steve Booth’s ferocious shot at the top of the D was deflected in by Mike Gallagher.
Booth then went from hero-to-zero after his stray pass went straight to a Portsmouth forward, who dispatched clinically.
Salisbury restored their lead when Akram Ghauri fired home.
Skipper Andy Renshaw said: "It was nice to finish the season with a win, but it wasn't quite the level of performance we have produced over the season, but I feel the umpires didn't allow us to play our usual fluid game."
"We're still in the cup so we'll do our best to finish with some success, but we've made some progress this year and, hopefully, whoever takes on the captaincy next year will benefit from that."
