THE spell of warm, summer-like weather gave a welcome boost for anglers visiting the region’s lakes.

Sport is picking up according to reports from fisheries with bream, tench as well as carp beginning to show more interest in baits. On some lakes larger carp also are making more of an appearance in anglers’ nets.

Barnmoor Lake at Witherington Farm Fishery is one of them as Mark Cannings found when he spent a day on the lake. During the day he banked over 60lb of skimmers and then in the evening turned his attention to the margins and large carp but continued with the pole. During a short spell of hectic activity, he landed five carp, the biggest at 27lb 8oz, another at 22lb and the others nudging 20lb.

Sport on Witherington’s other lakes is also picking up with skimmers, tench and smaller carp among the catches. At Dandy’s Ford Lane fishery, a weekend match on the Canal lake was won with 75lb with many of the lower weights in the 40lb range. The fishery’s other lakes are also improving following the warm spell.

Plenty of carp up to 10lb from the Match Lake at Waldens Farm Fishery while Monks and Popes lakes are producing some quality roach and good bags of bream up to 3lb each. The larger carp in Abbots and Bishops Lakes are still elusive but these lakes are producing bream, tench and some silver fish.
