DORSET darts star Scott Mitchell suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Glen Durrant in the final of the England Matchplay in Selsey.
The former Lakeside world champion was looking to regain the crown he last won back in 2014 but was beaten by Middlesbrough’s Durrant in the climax of the competition.
Bransgore’s Mitchell overcame stern opposition to reach the final two of the event. He beat Belgian Geert De Vos 4-2 in the last eight to set up a semi-final battle with Dean Reynolds.
Mitchell then triumphed 4-3 over Welshman Reynolds to confirm the final showdown with reigning BDO world champion Durrant.
The Dorset ace also reached the semi-final stage of the England Classic over the weekend before losing out 4-3 to eventual winner Jeffrey Sparidaans.
Dutchman Sparidaans managed to overcome Mitchell in their last-four encounter before going on to claim the crown with a 5-0 win over Paul Hogan in the final.
In the England Masters competition, the 47-year-old Mitchell was knocked out at the quarter-final stage 4-0 by Belgian thrower Andy Baetens.
‘Scotty Dog’ beat the likes of Jim McEwan and Daniel Day to reach the last eight.
