BEMERTON Heath Harlequins breezed past high flying Horndean with a comprehensive 3-0 home victory in the Wessex League Premier Division.

The home side could of taken the lead inside 20 seconds when Jake Rawkins was put through one-on-one but the goalkeeper saved well to keep the tricky winger at bay.

Bemerton looked a threat every time they went forward with the experienced partnership of Robbie Matthews and Jack Slade causing headaches for the away defence.

Bemerton took a deserved lead on seven minutes when Rawkins cross found the towering Robbie Matthews who smashed home with his left foot.

Horndean started to play some nice passing football but without actually penetrating the home back four.

Horndean started the brighter of the two teams after the re-start and were having good possession.

On 56 minutes though, Bemerton dealt Horndean the killer blow when Slade held off his defender and finished well in to the bottom right corner of the game.

Again Horndean had a couple of good chances when Tyler Moret was left unmarked in the box but on both occasions the forward was unable to hit the target.

This seemed to take all the wind out of the visitors as for the final 20 minutes Bemerton completely dominated with numerous chances being created.

Robbie Matthews had a few good chances with his head and feet but the goalkeeper pulled off some great saves, but he did get his second of the match when a Jake Rawkins’ free-kick was delivered to the back post where Slade rose highest to head back across goal for Matthews to fire into an empty net.

Manager Rae Hughes said: “This was a good solid performance against another top team in the division. We looked comfortable all afternoon and very dangerous going forward.

“Again the partnership of Slade and Matthews worked well today. I was really pleased that the lads are getting rewards now for all the hard work they are putting in on and off the pitch.”

Bemerton have been drawn away at Bremhil in the quarter-finals of the Wiltshire Senior Cup, the games will be played on either December 12 or 13.
