Salisbury & District League roundup - October 6/7
9:36pm Wednesday 10th October 2012 in Headlines
SOUTH Newton & Wishford opened up their defence of the Morrison Cup with a nine-goal thriller against Devizes Inn.
The home team took the lead, Rich Tutton scoring from the spot after Dan Brain was upended. However, Devizes were in front with two quick goals just before the break.
Newton's pressure eventually told when Mickey Tutton's flicked header was converted by Billy Poole and the game went to extra time.
Brain's strike made it 3-2, but the Division One leaders struck back immediately with a penalty. Rich Tutton's fabulous free kick restored Newton's advantage, and Adam Payne settled nerves, making it 5-3. Devizes clawed one back at the death, but the Blues held on.
Nomansland & Landford put in a fine performance to beat Figheldean Rangers 5-0 in the same competition. It was only 1-0 at the interval – Dan Browning winning a penalty which Lee Ricketts converted.
The home team really turned on the gas in the second period, Ben Gauntlett beating the offside trap to slot home. Browning was again brought down in the box, and Dan Jones finished the spot kick this time. Ben Talbot scored a neat fourth and Gauntlett chipped the goalkeeper for his second. Nomansland keeper Johnnie Milne had an excellent game at the other end.
Stockton & Codford also enjoyed a comfortable Morrison Cup win, crushing Winterslow 6-0. Lee Osment recorded a hat trick and Luke McGuckian, Joe Duffosee and Timmy Fry got the others.
Manager Jason Blandford was delighted at the result but is concerned about his small squad: “We restarted the reserves this season which is great news but with a few injuries we are struggling to get enough bodies."
Anybody interested in playing for the club can contact Blandford through Facebook. Wiltshire Junior Cup holders Stockton have been drawn away to Ashton Keynes in the first round of their defence, on November 3.
The reserves won 3-1 at Deacon Alms reserves in the Heseltine Cup. Alms took an early lead and Stockton only equalised in the last minute through Jayson Stokes' bullet header. Iain Carr and Gary Sleeman netted in extra time.
