SOUTH Wilts seconds ran into difficulty losing three early wickets after being put into bat at Rowlands Avenue, but fought back superbly to beat Waterlooville, last season’s undefeated Hampshire League champions, by 65 runs.

The victory confirmed a creditable third-place finish for South Wilts, who quickly lost Owain Phillips, Sam Pittman and Ben Draper to Danny Durant (4-40).

Tom Pearce got his head down and, in typical fashion, laid the paving stones for a South Wilts middle-order recovery.

Rob Pittman (55) and Rob Wade (33) took South Wilts to 136-4, while a crucial ninthwicket stand, involving Harry Hawkins (33 not out) and Marc Burton (21), lifted the score to a very acceptable 208 all out.

Waterloville’s reply never got into any rhythm, South Wilts making frequent inroads and only opener James Scott (31), Sam Hillman (30) and Max Goddard (27) making their presence felt.

Dom Webb, Rob Pittman, Pearce and Dom Ducellier each took two wickets for South Wilts.
