THE heavens opened on Saturday to hinder champions South Wilts from finishing off a poignant season with a 16th win as their ECB Premier Division closer at Alton was abandoned.

For the first time all season the rain wreaked havoc after skipper Tom Morton had the final word by etching his name into the history books in the year in which the Lower Bemerton outfit claimed a fourth successive league title and third consecutive Southern Electric twenty20 cup.

He smashed 106 to take his season's tally to 979 - the highest total scored in a campaign by a non-overseas player in SEPCL history and only 91 runs short of the all-time record held by New Zealander Neal Parlane from BAT Sports.

Morton's ton was his third of the season to add to five 50s as South Wilts had reached 195 for 5 off 43 overs when the rain interrupted play.

No games completed in the final weekend saw Havant finish runners-up and Sarisbury Athletic relegated.

South Wilts seconds created a piece of Southern Electric Premier League history as they clinched the Division 3 title.

South Wilts 2nds started their final game in search of just six points hosting already relegated Alton 2nds.

Having lost the toss, South Wilts were invited to bowl on a wicket that looked like it could offer assistance given last week's rain.

Two early wickets from Marc Burton appeared to prove this point as Alton stuttered to 25-2 off the first 10 overs.

The game seemed to be going to the form book, but Richard Anthony (74) had other ideas and his resistance led Alton to to 130-4 off 35 overs. The hosts were in danger of having a tricky chase in the gathering gloom.

The introduction of William Wade's off spin changed the course of the innings. He bowled Anthony in his second over and this fifth wicket led to a collapse from the visitors as the runs dried up completely.

Alton were eventually all out on the final ball of the innings for 173. Wade finished with 4-20 and Tom Pearce 3-29. Spin had once again done the damage for the hosts as South Wilts needed 174 to win but 125 to pick up the one remaining point to clinch the league.

In reply, Ben Draper added his attacking stroke play to a 108 run partnership before falling for 40. Jo Cranch joined Wade and was happy to play a supportive role as Wade eased through to a superb 103 not out. His innings included 16 boundaries as South Wilts reached their target for just two wickets down in just the 32nd over.

Luke Hansford hit a third consecutive century as a young South Wilts 4ths defeated Shrewton 2nds by 2 wickets to close the season mid-table of Hampshire Regional Two West.

The rain had the final say on the thirds' season as they were abandoned at St Cross, meaning they finished in a creditable fifth position in Hampshire County 3 North.
