SOUTH Wilts' hopes of a silverware-winning season hinges on a league and cup double-header this weekend, writes Mike Vimpany.

Their Southern Premier League and ECB NatWest Club T20 Blast ambitions go firmly on the line.

Saturday’s ‘old firm’ visit to Havant will probably decide whether the Lower Bemerton outfit can land a unique fifth successive Premier Division title.

On Sunday, the club hosts the ECB Club T20 Blast regional finals – a competition in which skipper James Hayward is desperate to enjoy some success.

South Wilts trophy cabinet has bulged with silverware for the past four summers, but it’s going to need a win at Havant - when the 50-over format returns - to keep the four-time winners in contention for a fifth title.

They trail Havant by 20 points going into the five-match home straight and Hayward knows it could all come down to winning at Havant Park.

“We’ve enjoyed the Indian Sign over Havant in Premier League and T20 cricket for some while now, so let’s hope that continues,” he said.

“Havant are probably as strong as they’ve been in recent seasons, but we’re running into some form now after that blip against the Academy and I’m confident that if we play to our full capacity we can win again.

“If we do, Havant’s lead will be trimmed to a few bonus points which, with four teams involved in the title race, will set up a terrific finale to the season.”

Irrespective of the outcome at Havant, Hayward will order an ‘early to bed’ instruction to his team so they can prepare for Sunday’s ECB T20 regionals at Wilton Road.

“We’ve not done ourselves justice in this competition previously and, with home advantage, will be looking to put the record straight,” he said.

“Wet weather and having to travel a long way has hindered our progress in the ECB competition previously, but we’re home this time, so can be at the ground for early morning bacon butties and some serious prep.”

South Wilts are on parade at 10am on Sunday morning, with Sussex Premier League giants Preston Nomads having to make a pre-breakfast trip from their Brighton home to play in the first semi-final at Bemerton.

If South Wilts beat the Sussex champions, they will play either hot favourites Sunbury or Tunbridge Wells (1pm) in a tea-time final.

South Wilts are planning a special T20 day, with music to accompany all the razzmatazz.

A licensed bar will be open all day, with hot food on sale.

Admission is free.
