SOUTH Wilts’ Dan Webb paved the way for the Army to beat the Royal Navy at Lord’s last week.

The 101st year of the fixture between the Army and the Royal Navy resulted in a comprehensive win for the Army by six wickets, in this, the first limited overs match to be played between the two services at Lord’s.

Key to the Army’s win was an excellent innings of 60 by Sergeant Dan Webb, pictured right in action during the game, a South Wilts cricketer who is currently serving in the Cyprus Joint Security Unit.

Coming in at number four, Webb faced just 40 balls for his 60 and hit nine fours and a six.

His straight driving and flicking off his legs was a delight, and he looked a class above any other batsman on the day.

Webb’s innings came as part of an easy chase for the Army, who had earlier bowled the Royal Navy out for just 139 in 45.3 overs on a good batting pitch with a short sided boundary to the Tavern side of the ground.

The total was reached in just 21.5 overs with Webb just missing out on the man of the match award to Army off spinner Jonathan Boynton, whose four wickets for 29 runs off seven overs was crucial in making the chase a comfortable one.

The Army retained the Inter Services trophy, an annual triangular competition between the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
