LAVERSTOCK & Ford and Verwood Town will rekindle an old rivalry when they meet at Potterne Park in the FA Vase First Round on Saturday, October 19.

They have not been in the same division since 2007-08 when Lavvy were promoted into the Sydenhams Premier Division in second place and the Potters finished fourth.

Verwood were promoted in 2012, the same year that Laverstock were relegated.

Both made it through the Second Qualifying Round with impressive away wins, Lavvy winning 1-0 at Western Premier League outfit Hengrove Athletic. Elliott Wykes grabbed the decisive goal with 20 minutes to go, when goalkeeper Steve Butler picked him out with a long kick and he volleyed into the top corner from 20 yards.

“It was a hard place to go because the pitch and facilities aren't the best, and they are a physical, direct side,” said co-manager Rob Lakeman.

“It was a bit of a smash and grab but we have played some good stuff recently and it was a good win.”

Verwood's 16-year-old prospect Dan Munday made a startling impact at Horndean, racing onto Nathan Saxby's through ball and rounding the goalkeeper to score after 30 seconds. The home team were almost as devastating at the start of the second half, equalising within 90 seconds.

The Potters were not deterred though, John Webb winning and converting a penalty on the hour.

Munday gave them some breathing space when he latched onto a backpass and fired in a low shot.

Former West Ham United full back Harvey Elsom, 17, was making his Verwood debut. Dan Fawcett was back in goal after his return to the club, with Chris Lynch out injured, and Alexander Eaton has also joined.

“We needed a result and we got it, with a good performance,” said manager Adie Arnold.

“The young players helped put us on the front foot, and apart from a short spell after they equalised, we were the better side.

“We used to have some good tussles with Laverstock so we are looking forward to locking horns again.”

Lakeman added: “Verwood are in the division above but they have had a few problems this season so hopefully we can go there and compete.”

Verwood head to Sholing on Saturday, while Laverstock have no game. Dean Bevis and Kristian Greer scored for the latter's reserves in a 5-2 home defeat to Hythe & Dibden on Saturday.

Luke Homer, Russell Dyer and Jack Lovell scored in Verwood’s 3-2 win at Lymington Town on Tuesday.
