BEMERTON Heath Harlequins’ Sydenhams Wessex League Cup hopes faded on Tuesday night as they were thrashed 7-0 by a rampant Sholing side in the quarter-finals.

Doubles from Barry Mason and Pete Castle confirmed a 4-0 lead at the interval for the Boatmen.

Byron Mason and Lee Wort’s brace rounded off the scoring in the second-half, writes Peter Howard at the Silverlake Arena.

Ian Chalk’s side weren’t at full strength, however, with three goalkeepers absent and topscorer Kane O’Keefe unavailable.

That meant keeper duty fell at the feet of rookie Lee Newman-Judd and he weathered the Boatmen’s advances until the 25th minute.

It was Barry Mason who broke the deadlock, as he followed up a Wort shot, from just outside the six-yard box, which pinged off the upright into his path to slot home with ease.

Two minutes later, Wort found himself in a similar position, just outside the six yard box, and knocked a shot at the Bemerton defenders, who were on the goalline.

That effort was blocked but it bobbled to Castle, who tapped home to make it 2-0.

The third was a spectacular shot from Mason from 25 yards. His fizzling, drilled blast, cannoned off the bar and in to the net, past the helpless Newman-Judd.

Castle then nailed a chance shot at the young stopper and he let the ball slip through into the goal.

Byron Mason’s cross, from inside the box, was met by Wort’s weak shot which painfully slipped under Newman-Judd.

The striker then had his 18th of the season as he headed home a crisp Barry Mason cross to complete a dismal night for Harlequins.
