REALISTIC Downton boss Jeff Softley says their weekend trip to basement boys Fawley is “make or break” as his relegation-threatened side are still winless in 17 games and in desperate need of three points.

The Robins suffered heartache once again, losing in the dying stages at clear leaders Winchester City on Tuesday night – just days after encountering a three-goal thumping on home turf to Totton & Eling.

With their last win dating back to October 22, a 3-0 triumph over Hamworthy United, Softley knows the importance of Saturday’s relegation scrap as currently a solitary point separates the two sides.

“We’re in a massive fight now for safety but based on Tuesday’s performance, where the boys were awesome and the win flattered Winchester, they will be up for it,” he told the Journal.

“We’re not going to be feeling down, we look forward to these big games and I still believe it will go right down to the wire.

“It’s a tough league to compete in. Fawley are down with us at the bottom of the table but I still reckon we can avoid the drop.

“We have to perform but if we lose, we’re in trouble. It’s make or break.”

Matt Palmer returned to defence after serving a 12- week suspension but could be doubtful for Fawley after he picked up a calf injury.

Tuesday sees them host Moneyfields (7.45pm).
