DOWNTON boss Colin Hopkins hailed shotstopper Charlie Aldridge for an “outstanding” display after his team were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Fleet Spurs in Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Division One.

Despite having most of the possession in the first half, goal-getter Ben Rankin fired the hosts into a onenil lead at half time.

Fleet Spurs, who have won two from their opening three matches, posed the visitors problems but Downton’s defence manned their area well, with the help of Aldridge, guarding his rearguard well.

Persistency paid off for the Robins as they restored parity, albeit through an own goal, but they couldn’t muster a winner as their wait for a first league win goes on.

Boss Colin Hopkins reflected: “Numerous changes were made from our previous game against Ringwood and Charlie was man of the match for outstanding decision making. He caught the ball when he could and punched when under pressure, plus he made a superb save in the second half.

“The lads were absolutely gutted we didn't win this game but if Charlie did not make such an important save we would have lost so on reflection a point was probably the fairest outcome.”

The Robins start their FA Vase journey at Swanage Town and Herston on Saturday (3pm).
