FIRST-CLASS Bemerton Heath Harlequins obtained six points in the space of four days to shoot up the Wessex Premier table.

Ian Chalk’s team got off to winning ways as skipper Jack Slade inspired them to a three-nil victory over AFC Portchester on Saturday.

The visitors made a pressing start and were rewarded with a perfectly executed goal.

Shaun Prentice forced the home keeper to a calamitous clearance which resulted in hitman Slade cleaning up on the error with a fizzing header.

Slade, who is starting to flourish this season, later saw a menacing shot handled in the area, winning a penalty for Graham Mankin to drill home for a two-goal lead at the break.

Slade knocked the woodwork after the restart but bagged a brace, and Bemerton’s third, when nestling another header into the corner.

Thrilled Harlequins manager Chalk said: “When I can field my best 14 players we are a match for anyone in this league.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to do that so far but Saturday was as close as I’ve come and it showed.

“Everybody including the substitutes contributed to a fantastic team performance and to single any one individual out is difficult but Jack was an inspiration.

“It was as complete a centre forward display as you will ever see.

“When he leads the team in that way, the rest follow.”

Harlequins avenged the FA Cup defeat to Winchester City with a single goal victory at Western Way.

They go to Bournemouth Poppies on Saturday in search of a third consecutive win.
