FOR a moment, it looked like Amesbury Town had enough in the tank to be crowned Wessex Division One champions.

They were in and around the top three for the majority of last season as they challenged for the title honours and promotion.

But a miserable March, when they lost four crucial matches on the trot, saw those glory chances scuppered.

After finishing in a record best of fourth place, they recharged their batteries and were bathed in glory after winning the Salisbury Hospital Cup with victory over Pewsey Vale.

Five new teams – Alton, Portland, AFC Stoneham, Christchurch and Totton & Eling – have been brought into the standings.

And Gareth Horner, whose robust squad remains the same, is not underestimating the quality on offer.

“There is no doubting that the Wessex One will be competitive this year with the two sides relegated and the introduction of Alton, Portland and AFC Stoneham. I would imagine all five will be strong,” said Horner, who’s back today from a two-week break.

“We have to look to build on last year but that’s not going to be easy. We need to get points on the board early but, looking at our start, it looks extremely tough.

“Add into the mix the FA Cup clash with Harlequins (August 15) we will certainly know where we are by the start of October.

“The lads have been great and everyone seems to be looking forward to the season ahead

"I’ve been away with the family for a fortnight and look forward to seeing the progress made when I get back.”

As well as holding onto free-scoring Danny Finnigan, Tyler Brockway and Paddy Crease, the Blues have been bolstered by some new faces.

Signings at Bonnymead Park include Max Donohue, who joins from Laverstock, Alex Oakman and Harry Baddeley from Thatcham, and Liam Gavin and Luke Offley, formerly of Reading Town.

Adam Pearson has agreed to sign on and play when he can and towering central defender Josh Thomas has also joined.

Duncan Smith and Salisbury trialist Eddie Perrett are yet to sign but Horner says “I would love for them both to stay”.

Behind the scenes, Rob Scott, from Bemerton Heath, and Jim Macey have also now teamed up with the backroom staff.

Natalie Durman is the club’s sports therapist and matchday physiotherapist.

Town open the season at Bonnymead Park with the visit of new-joiners AFC Stoneham (3pm).
