HEAD coach Colin Hopkins admitted Downton FC were outclassed by Portland United’s five-star showing.
The leaders’ 5-0 win saw them open up a seven-point lead at the Sydenhams Wessex Division One summit while destroying Robins’ unbeaten start at Wick Lane.
Portland, managed by Gary Bailey, enjoyed a perfect start, taking a three goal lead into the break.
Two further goals in the second 45 minutes provided Portland with much comfort.
Downton created chances and skipper Dan Newman came closest late on when he rocked the woodwork with a bullet header but, ultimately, the visitors’ ruthlessness showed by scorers Alex Godfrey (2), Edward Bastick, Carl McClements and Ryan McKechnie.
“We really fancied ourselves at home where, prior to Portland’s visit, we were unbeaten,” said Hopkins. “Although we should have done better with the goals we conceded, Portland were just too good for us.”
Despite the heavy defeat, Robins stay in sixth place.
