DOUBLE defensive errors ended Downton FC's brief run in the Wiltshire Senior Cup.

Mistakes in the first half were the two goals Robins conceded at Wick Lane to Trowbridge Town, falling at the second round hurdle.

A much-improved second period boosted Robins' chances of finding a response.

They had a golden opportunity to score when man of the match Harry Crisp created space on the left side of the pitch but his excellent delivery was headed wide by substitute Tom Western, formerly of Amesbury Town.

Trowbridge took both strikers off halfway through the second half and defended very well, with Downton keeper Charlie Aldridge hardly touching the ball.

Yet goals against the Wiltshire League Premier Division never arrived.

Manager Colin Hopkins said: "The reason football is such a fantastic game is because you can never predict the outcome, although us managers have wins, draws and possible defeats all mapped out."

"I had the game down as a win but it wasn't to be and wish Trowbridge all the best in the next round."
