DOWNTON FC inflicted more woe on rock-bottom Pewsey Vale with a four-goal romp at Wick Lane.

Ben Smith, Paul Gulliver and Shaun Prentice cruised Robins into a three goal lead at the break before Dan Telfer struck a fourth in what was hailed by manager Colin Hopkins as a "fantastic performance".

Robins, who have shifted one place into fifth in Sydenhams Wessex Division One, started the goal feast inside the first 120 seconds.

A long Telfer throw into the visitors' penalty box was flicked on by Gulliver for Smith to head in off the underside of the bar.

Chances came freely for the hosts and it was only a matter of minutes before a second was added. Lyndon Taylor's excellent pass carved open the Pewsey defence, which allowed Gulliver to meet it and slot home.

On-loan Gosport striker Shaun Prentice was a constant threat to the visitors and he chipped in a third.

Pewsey striker Richard Payne had a shot well saved by Aldridge, only for the resulting goal kick to be flicked on for Telfer to volley home just before half time.

"Pewsey are a side who we've always struggled to get a result against in the past and the conditions meant the ball had to stay on the ground," said Hopkins.

"I didn’t want the lads to go out and get into a battle with a basement side. "We pressed across the park and won our individual battles which made it hard for them to live with."

"Credit to Pewsey as they didn’t stop all afternoon but overall a fantastic performance."
