A SERIES of fine saves from Downton stopper Charlie Aldridge helped Downton set-up a 2-0 win against US Portsmouth on Saturday.
The keeper was called in action early on denying the visitors from a free-kick before a brilliant one handed save denied Portsmouth from a corner.
Downton took control of the game just before half-time when US Portsmouth failed to clear a Dan Telfer free-kick. Tom Aldridge was then on hand to smash home from ten yards.
The home side started the second half as the brighter side and doubled their lead midway through the period when Ben Smith headed home from Telfer's corner.
Despite some late pressure from US Portsmouth they held on to grab a first win in four games.
Manager Colin Hopkins said: "Once again we've taken points of a team above us in the league and deservedly so but we now have a very tricky fixture away to Pewsey Tuesday evening to think about. I never know what this group of players are going to give me, they can play brilliantly but when they're poor they really are poor but we only have seven games left now so a strong finish would be great."
