DEJECTED boss Graham Kemp has described Bemerton Heath Harlequins’ FA Vase exit to Melksham Town as a “devastating blow”.

Heath were in command of the last 64 tie after racing into a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Scott Joyce and Jack Slade.

Gary Higdon pulled one back from the spot to halve the deficit.

Bemerton then struck the crossbar and youngster Jake Burgess had the chance to wrap the tie up when he rounded the keeper but misfired — and those misses proved dear.

In the final 10 minutes, Ricky Hulbert levelled matters before Higdon snatched the tie 3-2 to book Town’s place in the fourth round.

“We had quite a comfortable second half but when they equalised we capitulated,” rued Kemp.

“We’ve got to start putting chances to bed.

“I didn’t say too much afterwards but I just had to pick Jake up because he was distraught.

“He thought it was all his fault and it wasn’t, he was outstanding.

“We should have beaten them. It’s a devastating blow as we were the better side.”

Bemerton’s tricky league form continued on Tuesday night following a 2-1 home defeat to Alresford Town in Sydenhams Wessex Premier.

Joyce looked to have rescued a point after John Cole gave the visitors the lead. But deep into stoppage time Jack Wiffen popped up with a late winner.

It’s a result that has slipped Bemerton down to 14th and they are now without a league win in seven games.

Kemp added: “It has been a tough six weeks.”

“Both goals were identical and we aren’t doing the basics.

“I’m bored of saying the same things, it’s very frustrating.

“The Vase may have been a distraction but it’s not an excuse for the goals we have conceded. We’ve got to stop making mistakes.”
