DOWNTON's unbeaten start to 2017 came to a crashing halt at Alton following a 3-0 defeat in Sydenhams Wessex Division One.
The Robins fell behind when Regan Hitch picked the ball up in midfield and unleashed a 30-yard shot which rippled into the net.
And things got worse for the visitors when Alton landed two goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half.
The first arrived from fullback Joe Green who found the top corner from 35 yards.
Gavin Muir was then tripped in the area and was awarded a penalty.
A calm Taylor Watts stepped up and sent keeper Charlie Aldridge the wrong way to give Alton a three-goal cushion.
Substitutes Jordan Holmes and Ryan Bunney went close to extending their lead, but Aldridge stood firm.
Boss Rae Hughes rued: "A disappointing result and performance."
"Although 3-0 flattered them, we didn't deserve anything from the game.
"We were hesitant in front of goal and lacked our usual desire."
"This game aside, though, I am happy with how 2017 has started and I know this group will bounce straight back."
