BEMERTON Heath Harlequins' cup tie with Shrewton United was abandoned last night after one of the floodlights caught on fire.

The teams were competing in the Salisbury Hospital Cup semi-final at The Hollow, Shrewton when the incident occurred.

After Scott Joyce had missed a penalty in the 75th minute when it was 0-0, smoke was coming out of the floodlight which caught the eye of spectators.

Two fire crews arrived at the scene at 9.25pm and used a carbon dioxide extinguisher to put it out.

Bemerton manager Graham Kemp said: "I've been in football a long time and haven't seen a floodlight catch fire like that before.

"It was already quite dark as two bulbs weren't working properly."

No one was injured.

The game will be rearranged in upcoming weeks.

Kemp added: "I'm presuming the rearranged fixture will be at ours as Shrewton have quite a serious problem with their floodlights.

"The never-ending season continues."
