A BRACE from Ben Smith helped Downton continue their rich vein of form with a 2-1 victory at United Services Portsmouth.

The assistant player/manager was on target either side of half-time for the Robins, who stretched their unbeaten streak to four games.

A Dan Telfer free kick was whipped into the box and Smith rose highest at the back post and headed across goal for the opener.

Straight after the restart Smith provided a mirror finish of the first goal thanks to another perfect delivery from Telfer.

Shaun Prentice could have grabbed a third goal when he smacked the crossbar from close-range.

Charlie Aldridge kept Pompey at bay until the 89th minute when Brendon Agnew converted a spot kick.

"I am really delighted for the lads," beamed Robins boss Rae Hughes.

"US Portsmouth are a top side but we had a game plan and every single player believed in it and stuck to it, and it worked."

Twelfth-placed Downton have three games left, starting with relegation-threatened Hythe and Dibden at home on Saturday (3pm).

"I have challenged the players, once more, to keep this run going," added Hughes.

"I just really wish there was another 10 games to go. We entertain Hythe this weekend and at times we have struggled against the teams at the lower end of the table so we must make sure we approach the game exactly the same."
