DOWNTON returned to winning ways as they came from behind to beat visiting Fawley 3-2 in the Wessex League Division One.

Heavy rain and a boggy pitch made playing conditions very difficult for the second week in a row, but this did not stop both sides from playing some entertaining football.

Downton took the lead from Ben Vincent's thumping header from a Dan Telfor corner.

Almost immediately the action was at the other end, with some neat trickery from the Fawley winger skipping by two and finishing well. Downton kept playing some excellent football and were much the better side for most of the half.

However, five minutes before the break, the Downton defence switched off and gifted a goal to the visitors as they went 2-1 up.

The start of the second half saw Downton at there best, the home side were passing there way through their opposition with Craig Tyson and Harry Crisp dominating the midfield.

It was Downton who deserved the next goal and some excellent play from Shaun Prentice, saw Declan Mcgregor and Paul Gulliver link up and Telfor ended a fantastic move as he crashed in the equaliser.

Downton started to show their strength and were camped in the Fawley half trying to break the defence down.

Prentice’s trickery was the key to the next goal as he out foxed the defence and crossed for Ben Smith to see his header rattle the crossbar and the rebound was coolly finished by Telfor for his second.

After this the home side stood strong and saw out a well deserved win and a fine display of football for the bumper crowd.

After the game, Downton boss Ben Smith said: "It’s been a difficult run and the pressure was on to find a win. The lads were immense today, coming from behind and winning has given everyone that much need lift.

"Today we put our chances away and out played our opponents. Hopefully we can take that to next week and improve on our league position."

Downton are 11th in the table and this Saturday they entertain Totton and Eling, who are one place and three points below them.
