Salisbury & District League roundup - April 18-22

BOSCOMBE Down Rec Club added the Cook Cup to their Charity B Cup with a 3-0 win over Chalke Valley at Bemerton last Wednesday.

They went close after ten minutes, when Ashley Griffiths' 30-yard strike forced a brilliant save from the Valley goalkeeper. Tom Brown and Robbie Homebury put together a great passing move shortly afterwards which gave Brown a chance to score but his shot crashed off the crossbar.

Valley's resistance finally caved in after half an hour, when Martin Luke beautifully headed in Griffiths' free kick. Danny Rider went close to doubling the lead before half time but the Valley keeper pulled off a brilliant save.

He was the only thing standing in the way of Boscombe capping their free-flowing football with more goals, saving well from Luke after the break. In the end Dave Sage played in Paul Matthews who turned the last defender inside out before eventually sliding in the second goal. Matthews was unlucky not to bag his second minutes later when his low shot from outside the box skimmed off the post.

Sage hammered a 30-yard free kick into the top left corner, a goal worthy of any cup final with five minutes to go.

The two sides faced off again in the league on Saturday, and Valley won 2-1. Wayne Parsons gave them the lead after 35 minutes, reacting quickest when the Boscombe keeper failed to deal with a free kick.

Boscombe pressed Valley back and were rewarded after 62 minutes when Chris Young levelled with his 22nd goal of the season.

With the game petering out, Nick Lach found space in the box to grab the winner with six minutes left. There was still time for Parsons to earn a penalty after running from inside his own half two minutes into injury time. He took the kick himself but the Boscombe keeper pulled off an excellent save.

On Sunday, St Pauls Club celebrated winning Division One in style by beating FC Bulford 8-3. Jamal Brooks hit a hat trick, and Rick Parsons, Bruce Kerley, Ned Jackson, Jasper Waters and Clyde Guthrie got one apiece.
