Honours even as Shrews stay fifth

SHREWTON United tightened their grip on fifth place in Toolstation Western League Division One after holding visiting Hengrove Athletic to a 0-0 draw.

Although the Shrews created the lion's share of the chances in a largely unremarkable contest, boss Stuart Withers described the stalemate as "a fair result".

He said: "It was an even game.

"We had a few decent chances in each half but, credit to their goalkeeper, he saved them all rather than our boys missing."

Before sixth-placed Athletic's visit, Withers had urged his side to work hard to get something from the game in order to halt the progress of the only side still capable of denying them the top five finish on which he set his sights at the start of the season.

He said: "Hengrove would now have to win every game to overtake us, so they've got their work cut out and I can't complain, because we have been enjoying a good run of form."

However, on Tuesday, United's run came to an end when they lost 1-0 at lowly Almondsbury.

They are on their travels again on Saturday, visiting strong title contenders Wellington, who are two points adrift of long-time leaders Sherborne Town but with three games in hand and a slightly superior goal difference.

Withers said: "They are well-placed but they have dropped some points recently and they must be getting nervous.

"It is going to be a hard game but it's a good challenge for us.

"It's never easy at Wellington's ground because it's a big open pitch with a slight slope, so I'm hoping for good conditions."

The first Shrewton United Golf Day and auction will take place on April 27 at Stonehenge Golf Centre in Larkhill.

There are individual and team prizes for nine holes on the par-three course followed by a driving range challenge.

The event will be followed by lunch and a raffle and auction at the Recreation Hall.

Among the auction items on offer are a replica Southampton 1976 FA Cup shirt signed by Mick Channon, a morning on the gallops with racehorse trainer Seamus Mullins and four tickets for a day's cricket at the Rose Bowl.
