SPORT ROUND-UP

SNOOKER:

THE joint leaders in the Cuestars South Wilts Snooker League have dropped just one frame apiece after the second week’s action at Salisbury Snooker Club.

Adam Guyatt (Salisbury) compiled a 45 break in the third frame of his 5-0 win against Ally Pollard (Alderholt).

And Martin Hill (Durrington), who rejoined the league last season following a five-year break, accounted for Richard Arnold (Salisbury) 4-1 in a scrappy match.

“I was pleased with four frames as it could have easily been a 3-2 result either way,” Hill said.

Elsewhere, James Bolton, (Amesbury) picked up his first win of the season against Paul Burt (Britford) and now leads the race for the highest placed under-21 player.

Speaking after the 3-2 victory, Bolton, 19, said: “It was a difficult match for both players as neither of us really got going.

“It was just a few key balls that were the difference.”

Defending champion John Hunter (Andover) saw off 14-year-old Callum McDonald (Bishopdown) 5- 0.

SWIMMING:

SALISBURY Stingrays finished in a respectable fourth position in the final of the Arena League at Millfield School, Somerset.

After finishing in the top eight teams of division one, following the first two rounds in Weston-super- Mare and Bodmin, Salisbury were placed into the A final.

The final was contested as a Long Course event, in a 50m pool, but the change of distance didn’t hamper Stingrays, particularly Joe Fenwick, Nathan Burn, Harry Salmon and Luke Dear, part of the winning boys 9 to 11 years 4x50m freestyle team.

In the boys 13 and under 50m breaststroke Sidney Fenwick excelled to take the win for Salisbury. Emma Jackson Dear and Salmon also scooped individual wins.

In the 10 and 11 years 50m freestyle, Salisbury took a double win in the girls and boys events.

Oni Taiwo and Dear took the honours. Luke Demetri clocked another individual win for Salisbury in the boys 15 and under 100m breaststroke as the Stingrays finished in a creditable fourth place overall.

MOTOR SPORT:

CASTLE Combe Circuit has appointed Rodney Gooch as motorcycle co-ordinator to develop the circuit’s two-wheel activities.

Gooch, an ex TT rider who competed during the late 1960s and early 1970s, has been with the Wiltshire circuit for more than 22 years as sales and marketing director.

However, the new part-time role will give the circuit a dedicated motorcycle specialist for the first time.

“It will be ten years since we ran the Castle Combe Superbike Grand National, the biggest event in its history. And I will be working hard to ensure the 2014 two-day event attracts competitors and spectators.

The meeting, being sponsored by NG Road Racing Club, will take place on the weekend of June 21.
