TWO of Salisbury Stingrays’ swimmers prospered at a highly-regarded tournament.

Rob Langan and Phil Muspratt were joined by the finest swimmers at the British Gas National Masters Short Course Championships in Sheffield.

At the three day event, where several British, European and world records were smashed, the duo impressed.

Muspratt, whose preparation was hindered by a wrist injury, managed to splash his way to a trio of medals.

He clinched bronze in the men’s 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle, and went one better in the 50m freestyle with silver.

The swimmer has retained his British number one ranking in the two freestyle events despite not claiming gold.

He said: “Twelve months ago I came here and went home with four golds and as many PBs.

Naturally my aim was to do the same this year.

“I knew with such little training this was an immensely tough ask, but of course even though I knew the score, I’m still gutted I didn’t reach my goals at these championships.”

In the lead up to the event, Muspratt’s teammate Langan was beaming with confidence after registering wins at the third round of the Wiltshire County Masters Championships.

Langan dipped out on medals in a series of backstroke and freestyle swims but came up trumps with a bronze in the 100m backstroke, a personal favourite, in a storming time of one minute and three seconds.

“I am absolutely delighted with my swims this past weekend,” Langan said.

“I have certainly learnt a lot and will be able to work on that in the pool so that I am fully prepared for this summer’s championships.”
