FORMER England cricket captain Mike Gatting will be getting stuck into some crucial DIY duties at Winterbourne Cricket Club as part of NatWest CricketForce 2015.

Gatting, an ECB Cricket Partnership ambassador, will visit the south Wiltshire club on Saturday to help maintain the pavilion and assist on a variety of jobs required to get the ground in tip-top condition for the new season.

He's visiting the club at Portway in conjunction with NatWest CricketForce, which sees tens of thousands of players, members and volunteers help refurbish facilities at clubs in need of additional maintenance help.

He said: “I'm really looking forward to visiting Winterbourne CC and meeting everyone connected to the club. I urge everyone in the local community to come and support.”

We did a club last year in Wales that was very similar to Winterbourne, where the youth hostel association had a ground.”

“On the day you can really see how much the ground had changed, and if you took before and after photos you'd be staggered.

“Benches were painted, new doors were put on, the square was treated, and so much more. It was a fantastic day, and if this is anything like that we will be able to see by the end of the day what a difference there is and how much has been done

“It's a terrific thing to do for me, and while it's always great to stop clubs going under, when we can actually promote and push a new club that's come back from the dead it is very, very satisfying, as there's not enough of that going on at the moment.”

Winterbourne chairman Jamie Harvey is encouraging everyone from the community to come along and help on the day.

"This event is a major boost for the club and provides us with the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for the next generation of players,” he said.

“Everyone is welcome to come and visit the ground and help out throughout the day - there will be a free t-shirt and food for all volunteers, Kwik cricket for the kids and the chance to work alongside Mike Gatting on various projects around the ground.”
