TWENTY-FOUR Sarum Orienteers joined 3,500 athletes from around the globe to compete in the Jan Kjellström 2015 festival held over Easter weekend in the Lake District.
The first race was an urban sprint around the Lancaster University campus. Sarum’s best results came from Harry Butt, 12th in the M20 elite class, with Carolyn Dent ninth in W50 and Charlotte Thornton eighth in W70.
Over the next two days, the main individual competitions were held on typical, technically and physically difficult Lakeland Fell and forest terrain at Ulpha Park and Bigland, which proved a real test of orienteering skills.
Sarum runners achieved some excellent results over the tournament in the highly-competitive field, saving the best to last.
Ben Chesters and brothers Harry and Tom Butt stormed round the Men’s open short course, beating nearest rivals Devon by one minute 46 seconds to retain the title that they won last year.
