AN enthralling weekend of racing capped a sublime bank holiday weekend of racing at the Avon Tyres/TTC Group British Hillclimb Championship.

Two days at at Gurston Down Speed Hillclimb saw reigning British Hillclimb Champion Scott Moran from Shropshire and co-driver Alex Summers from Worcestershire share top honours in the first British Hillclimb Championship ‘Run Off’.

Identical times were the quickest of the weekend so they shared the Daily Express Peter Collins Trophy for Best Time of the Day on 26.25 seconds for the 967 metre course.

In the drizzle-affected second Run Off, with all the drivers showing outstanding commitment on a track becoming increasingly tricky, Alex Summers, running first, almost equalled his first Run Off time to lead the field.

Moran, running last, somehow set a quicker halfway split time than Summers and an identical finish line speed (close to 145mph), but finished 29 hundredths adrift in second spot.

Wilton Racing’s Chris Cannell won the over two litre sports libre class in his twin engine 2.6 Force SR8 and co-driver Sue Hayes finished in fourth place in the class.

Cannell also picked up the award for the overall fastest time by a member of the organising club, the BARC (SW), who was not registered for the British Hillclimb Championship.
