SALISBURY anglers did well in last weekend's interclub competition between Salisbury Angling Club and Test Valley AC.

Two lakes were used for the match, Salisbury's Nightingale Lake, near Wellow and Test Valley's Willow Lake and Salisbury anglers took the two top places on both lakes.

Top man on Willow Lake was Malc Pepperill (Salisbury AC) with 54lb 6oz and fellow club member, Chris Opey, was second with 38lb 12oz. On Nightingale Lake Shaun Gumbleton (GT Baits Salisbury) was the winner with 54lb 10oz and George Stainer (Salisbury AC) was runner-up.

The previous weekend, Salisbury AC held its annual Fred Pearson Cup competition at the club's Steeple Langford lakes. Sixteen bream weighing a total of 58lb 12oz put Steve Brown's name on the cup for 2015 while Paul Barnard was runner-up with 39lb. Graham Haughton was third with 21lb 2oz.

The recent spell of very hot weather has kept many anglers at home and fishery owners report a quiet period with few anglers about and few fish. It is the same story with the upper reaches of the Avon with few anglers on the banks of the London AA stretch at Britford. Bailiff, Stuart Wilson, said the few fishermen that did try their luck, caught a few dace and small chub but it was hard going.

Once again the Ringwood area has produced better sport on both lakes and rivers. Tench to 9lb from Hucklesbrook Lake and carp to 40lb from Spinaker Lake.

One angler, float fishing the Avon at Ringwood Park, close to the town centre, landed a 12lb 10oz barbel and the Winkton stretch is giving anglers mixed bags of dace and roach up to 15lb or so a sitting.

Now the heat as eased a bit and there has been some refreshing rain, sport should improve on both rivers and lakes.
