CITY of Salisbury men’s squad are counting down the weeks before they can re-start their assault on the strongly-contested Hampshire League title.

They won it in 2012-13 and 2013-14 but finished in a disappointing eighth last season, so are hoping to mastermind a massive improvement in five weeks’ time when the new season launches.

The 2014/15 winners have been confirmed as Stubbington Green AC, with Winchester grabbing the women’s title with both hands.

First event in the new, 2015 campaign, which sees races staged in various locations across the south, is the Overton 5-mile road race on Sunday, September 6.

A bumper turnout of Salisbury runners is expected to flock to Hampshire to tackle the starter head on.

In other league news, final positions have been calculated in the Wessex Young Athletes’ track and field tables and show City of Salisbury in tenth spot overall.

The talented under 17s’ group is making the best showing in fourth behind the region’s ‘big three’ of Camberley, Basingstoke and Kennet.

Meanwhile, at the Frome half marathon, Kevin Daniels finished in the top 50 with a time of 92mins 59sec.

And in the Bath off-road hilly half marathon David Osment clocked 2hours 55mins 12sec.
