FRENCH jockey Gerald Mosse dazzled racegoers on Thursday with a stellar performance in the saddle.

The Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe and Melbourne Cup winning jockey rode two horses for Hungerford based trainer, Clive Cox, and landed the spoils on both Bobby Wheeler in the opening maiden, and Kodi Bear in the feature Totepool Sovereign Stakes to make the journey over from France very much a worthwhile exercise.

Drawn widest of all, Mosse bounced Bobby Wheeler out of the stalls sharply in The Totepool Racing’s Biggest Supporter Maiden and used his Colt’s hot turn of foot to cut across to the far rail and lead the field. Mosse held Bobby Wheeler together at the head of the field before asking for an effort entering the final furlong; his charge duly responded and bounded further clear of the field to score by three lengths eased down, an impressive display.

In the feature race, the £75,000 Group 3 Totepool Sovereign Stakes, Mosse employed the same tactics aboard a keen Kodi Bear who raced prominently throughout. As the field entered the straight, Kodi Bear headed for the centre of the track while the remainder of the field opted to mount their challenges on the stands-side rail, leaving Mosse in splendid isolation. Kodi bear was then dramatically switched across the width of the track to join the rest of the field on the stands-side and powered clear for an extremely impressive victory in Salisbury’s feature race of the year. In the process, Kodi Bear provided not only Mosse with a double, but trainer Clive Cox also and his charge now has his sights set on the lofty heights of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day. Kodi Bear’s imperious victory in the Group 3 Totepool Sovereign Stakes will be remembered for years to come by many a racegoer who saw it at Salisbury on Thursday.

Elsewhere on the card, Salisbury’s leading partnership for 2015, Pat Dobbs and Richard Hannon, combined to get off the mark at this year’s Salisbury Splendour with Filosofo in a driving finish to the Play The New Scoop6Soccer Every Week Handicap before Charlie Hills and Paul Hanagan combined to score by the tightest of margins in the Mary Wort Memorial Maiden with Khareer.

There was another tight finish in the Bill Garnett Memorial Fillies’ Handicap as Megan Nicholls rousted Hipz, from the Laura Mongan yard, to hold on in the dying strides from a fast finishing Capelita under the returning Jim Crowley. There was nothing tight about Stockhill Diva’s victory in the earlier Win A Football Fortune With Scoop6Soccer EBF Stallions Fillies’ Handicap as Liam Keniry’s mount eased clear of the field to give trainer Brendan Powell a richly deserved victory. The final race of 2015s Salisbury Splendour was landed by The Twisler under a cool Jamie Spencer for Jane Chapple-Hyam who got the better of Mick Channon’s Diamond Joel inside the final furlong of the Kevin Hall & Pat Boakes Memorial Handicap.

Reflecting on the meeting, Clerk of the Course Jeremy Martin had this to say: “There was some excellent racing over the two days and the emphatic winner of our big race on the Thursday, Kodi Bear, looks a really exciting three-year-old with great potential.”

Evening Racing, followed by live music from Britain Got Talent finalists Jack Pack, is on Friday night.

First race is at 5.35pm.
