CITY of Salisbury distance runner Aaron Wilson produced a classy performance at the New York marathon.

He added to his collection of sub-three hour successes at world major events by crossing the line in Central Park in 2hours 47min 44sec, exactly 45 seconds slower than his previous record set at the Chicago marathon last year.

Following a 2.57 set on the fast roads of Berlin and a 2.56 in the renowned London race in previous years, he has now joined the top one per cent of marathoners in the UK, just reward for the dedicated training he has put in to reach his current level.

Strong wind and heavy rain greeted hundreds of athletes contesting the second Hampshire cross country league fixture at Popham near Basingstoke, where some the younger members of the Salisbury contingent endured the hardest running conditions they have known.

In the under-13s, Rose Warren led the way with 23rd place, with Alicia Finnis and Alice Olliff-Lee close behind in 28th and 29th. Mia Crane made 33rd and Kate Hopper and Elena Bessey were 61st and 62nd. Among the boys, Neil Battey came 39th and Ollie Brown and Ben Hopper were 75th and 76th.

Abigail Burn was tenth for the under-15s with Louise Webb 23rd and Tash Mundell 53rd, while in the boys’ race Alex Osborne and Jamie McNulty were 66th and 67th.

Jay Domoney did well to score 14th and Fabrice Webb 30th in the under-17s, and in the senior men’s event Gio Downie was 60th, Andy Holm 101st, Adam Bradburn 168th and Gary Domoney 216th.
