ELLINGHAM and Ringwood leaped off the bottom of Snows Hampshire One after

winning at the fourth time of asking.

The 18-15 victory – their second of the term – came at home to Isle of Wight.

Young back row forward Jack White scored the opening try after being presented with the Dick Birch memorial award at the club's vice president lunch.

White was chosen for the award, which honours former prop forward and club chairman, Birch, for his first-rate contribution at the Parsonage Barn Lane outfit.

Centre Charlie Cockram finished off a good move to score a second try, which full back Josh Butcher converted.

In the last five minutes of the half, the visitors played some of their best rugby and were rewarded with a try to make the score 12-5 at the break.

The Islanders kicked an early penalty to reduce the deficit to 12-8, but despite the difficult conditions, Ellingham came back strongly and fly half Will Gough kicked a penalty to extend the lead to 15-8.

A converted try from the visitors made the scores equal before Butcher kicked a penalty kick, which won the game.

They look for back-to-back league wins when they host Fareham Heathens on Saturday (2.15pm).

Elsewhere, Ellingham Women smashed Portsmouth 54-5 in friendly.

The women, firmly in charge of Women's NC South West 1, put the hosts to the sword on Sunday.

In the first half, Ellingham scored three tries from Nina Hoadly, Emily Swales and Abbie Burke. Their full back Chloe Barrett also kicked two conversions to give them a 19-0 lead at the break.

Ellingham scored five further tries from fly half Cherrelle Jameson (2), centre Abbie Awdas, prop forward Hannah Duffy and Hoadley. Abbie Awdas kicked all five conversions to take a 54-0 lead, before Portsmouth’s fly half scored a last minute consolation try.
