AN ENCOURAGING performance from Phil Muspratt earned him a bronze medal at the City of Derby Open Meet.

The Salisbury swimmer posted a season's best time of 24.33 seconds in the 50m freestyle to seal third place at the two-day event, held at Ponds Forge International Pool, Sheffield.

In the 100m freestyle, Muspratt, who was seeded 26th, finished in 15th.

"The 50m free for me was brilliant, it felt good," he said.

"The 100m wasn't great but it's my first race of the long course season and it's a marker to improve on.

"I didn't attack the first 50m hard enough, but I'm aware that my 100m freestyle won't start showing anything too impressive until March, hopefully at the Welsh Masters National Championships."

Muspratt is back in the pool at the Burns Open Meet.
