A BUMPER number of joggers helped Salisbury parkrun break another record.

Saturday saw 337 runners and walkers cross the finish line in Churchill Gardens.

Event director Elizabeth Roberts said: “The Salisbury team are really pleased that numbers have stayed high since January, when New Year's resolutions were at the front of people's minds.

"Now that the weather is better, we expect to attract 300-plus walkers and runners every week.

"A lot of the walkers who joined us back in January are still attending; with many of them now running part of the course."

"It's all part of our cunning plan to get people active and introduce them to the benefits of running regularly – although there are no time constraints to complete the 5K, a timed walk or run motivates participants to try and beat their previous time."

Saturday's event will see Salisbury parkrun's 10,000th finisher.

And later this year, on Saturday, June 4, the run's first anniversary celebrations will be marked with fancy-dress, prizegiving, a birthday cake, and a special visit by BBC Sports reporter Vassos Alexander.

KICKING off the club’s Spring marathon season with a personal triumph, City of Salisbury’s Rithy Hy improved his previous best at the Manchester 26miler by just two minutes.

But crucially, his run took him below the elusive three hour barrier that so many club athletes aspire to and never attain. Among nearly 10,000 finishers, he crossed the line in 2hours 59min 23sec, a superb result for him and fine reward for all his hard preparation miles.

At the Devizes half marathon, William Watson claimed 12th place with a good 1.27.24.
