A HOSPITAL team notched up a silver medal at the Inter Spinal Unit Games.

Patients from The Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre at Salisbury District Hospital finished runners up of the games– an event which introduces patients with a recent spinal cord injury to sport.

Competing against 14 spinal injury centres from across the nation last weekend, Salisbury finished second behind the champions, and hosts, Stoke Mandeville.

Salisbury’s Matt Fraiser and Scott Gerred won gold medals in wheelchair tennis and target shooting, while Stuart Vinter was presented the award for outstanding individual achievement and effort.

Team manager Martin Whitfield, who since 2010 has led Salisbury to four victories, said: “I am so proud of Stuart Vinter for his individual award, and delighted that we have finished runners up out of all the teams taking part.”

“Everyone’s had a really good year and wholly enjoyed it.

"No matter what the results win, lose, or draw it’s all been about taking part in the sports. As team manager, my aim in the last seven years of coming to the Inter Spinal Unit Games has been to encourage participants to push their boundaries and help them achieve to the top of their potential.”

Some100 participants took in the Inter Spinal Unit Games organised by WheelPower, the national charity for wheelchair sport.
