A TRIO of Salisbury Tri Club (STC) athletes jet-setted to Mallorca for the Ironman 70.3 where they were expecting to be basked in sunshine.

But, unpredictably and rarely, torrential rain struck as Nigel Peterson, Dudley Kent and Alan Bayliss prepared for the mammoth race.

In store was a 1.9k swim in the sea, which was surrounded by jellyfish, a 90.1k cycle ride and a half marathon to finish.

Peterson crossed the finish line first for STC, completing the 21.2k run in 1:57 giving him an overall race time of five hours, 38 minutes and 54 seconds.

Bayliss ran his half marathon in 1.54, finishing the 70.3 distance race in an overall personal best time of 5.52.33.

But for Kent, his race came to a halt at stage two, crashing off his bike and seeking hospital treatment with a number of pros due to the inclement weather.

On home soil, Ruth Thom participated in the Leaky Freaky Duathlon.

In the event, based at the Roadford Lake Complex, on the Devon and Cornwall borders, Thom was the third fastest female over the line in a time of 4.32.13.

This weekend saw the Immortal Triathlon take place at Stourhead.

Rich Hamilton and Chris Cox were on the start list for the sprint distance event which took place on Saturday. The sprint race covered a 900m swim, 20-mile bike and 4.5 mile run.

Hamilton was the first STC finisher in a time of 1.48, coming seventh. Christina Cox crossed the line in 2.34.

Matthew Whicher, Phil Pettit, Emma Wardall and Scott Hill took part in the half distance race on Sunday. The event comprised of a 1,900m swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.

Hill came second in this half-iron race, in a quick time of 4.35, winning his age group. Next to finish for STC was Pettit in 5.26. Wardall was the second lady home in 5.38.

Whicher followed in 6.16.
