ABOUT 5,000 racegoers enjoyed a balmy Saturday evening at Salisbury Races' bank holiday meet.

Evening Racing & Spire FM Does The 80s had six races, starting with the opening race for two year olds.

First home was Richard Hannon's Repton, who scored readily at odds of 4-6F under Sean Levey, from the William Haggas trained Second Thought.

The biggest field of the evening, with 14 runners, contested the six-furlong handicap, and this was claimed by Gilmer, who swept past his rivals down the outside.

Gunmental, trained by Charlie Hills, held off Dark Shot in the Maiden Stakes for three year olds and upwards.

The Graduate won the one-mile and four furlongs' handicap for trainer Andrew Balding, and the up-and-coming apprentice jockey Edward Greatrex.

The feature race of the day - the £12,000 Bathwick Tyres Handicap over one mile and six furlongs - was won in excellent fashion by 15-8F Starchitect.

The final Classified Stakes was won by the 6-1 outsider, Panko.

Jeremy Martin, executive director and clerk of the course, said: “Saturday was a very busy evening and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

"It is a very good fixture slot to have, within the Spring Bank Holiday, which I am sure will continue to grow in future years."

This month sees the Netherhampton Road course host three meetings. They are on June 7, June 12 and June 22.
