BBC Radio 2 sports reporter Vassos Alexander was among a record-breaking number of runners who celebrated Salisbury parkrun's first anniversary.

Alexander, who presents the sport on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, was part of 469 runners and walkers who completed the 5k race round Churchill Gardens on Saturday.

Mayor of Salisbury, Derek Brown, and councillors Penny Brown, Michael Pope and Sven Hocking were also in attendance.

Event director Elizabeth Roberts says it was a day to remember.

"We had such a great morning at Churchill Gardens; one of our volunteers made us a most delicious Salisbury parkrun First Anniversary cake and there were some excellent fancy-dress costumes, including pirates, a strawberry, a team of Where's Wally and an

inspired wookie cushion," she said.

"We even had someone running the entire course backwards, dressed in a pink tutu!"

There were also a host of awards handed out at the prize giving ceremony.

Lee Syrett took first place in the annual Men's Points Competition 2015/16 and Amanda Jefferies won the Women's Points Competition. The volunteers were also recognised. Jef Hutchby, Graham Wickham and Vasen Moodley received awards for their commitment to Salisbury parkrun in taking on tasks such as mending equipment, organising volunteers, liaising with Salisbury City Council, obtaining funding for the original set-up fee and arranging for Girls Love Fit to provide a warm up every week.

Jeanette Hardiman received the Most Prolific Volunteer 2015/16 for volunteering at 51 out of 53 events. Andy Robbins received the Photographer Of The Year 2015/16 for taking pictures at 41 events, resulting in nearly 22,000 photos being uploaded to the Salisbury parkrun website.

The Salisbury parkrunner Of The Year 2015/16 recognised a participant who the core volunteer team felt had shown the most commitment, dedication and persistence in their running over the past year, which went to Kate Luter.

Roberts added: β€œIt was my great pleasure to give this award to Kate. In recent weeks, she has been able to run the course for the first time, with no walking breaks and only last week achieved a personal best time after 39 parkruns at Salisbury. Kate demonstrates what parkrun is all about; to give those who don't necessarily consider themselves at all sporty the motivation to get fit, have fun and socialise every Saturday morning.”
